What Are Free Radicals?

"Free radicals are highly reactive compounds that are created in the body during normal metabolic functions (exercise, digestion and even breathing) or introduced from the environment (certain foods, alcohol, air pollution, etc.). Free radicals are inherently unstable, since they contain "extra" energy. To reduce their energy load, free radicals react with certain chemicals in the body, and in the process, interfere with the cells' ability to function normally. Antioxidants work in several ways: they may reduce the energy of the free radical, stop the free radical from forming in the first place, or interrupt an oxidizing chain reaction to minimize the damage caused by free radicals.
Free radicals are believed to play a role in more than sixty different health conditions, including unhealthy aging, cancer, and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Reducing exposure to free radicals and increasing intake of antioxidant nutrients has the potential to reduce the risk of free radical-related health problems. As we discussed last week, for example, fats and cholesterol are very susceptible to oxidation and free radical damage. When the damage is done, fats form lipid peroxides and cholesterol gets oxidized which injure the artery walls and accelerate the progression of atherosclerosis. Antioxidants block the formation of these destructive compounds.
Oxygen, although essential to life, is the source of the potentially damaging free radicals when it's combined with certain environmental triggers. Environmental sources of free radicals include exposure to ionizing radiation (from industry, sun exposure, cosmic rays, and medical X-rays), ozone and nitrous oxide (primarily from automobile exhaust), heavy metals (such as mercury, cadmium, lead, and even iron in excessive levels), cigarette smoke (both active and passive), alcohol, fat, excess sugar, and other chemicals and compounds from food, water, and air.”
But what about intake through the skin?
Not all of us have taken care to eliminate the skin absorption and lung intake of chlorine and contaminants from our shower water supplies and drinking water. Chlorine is used in suppressing bacterial growth and disease in the transmission of water, but when it leaves the nozzle, it becomes a significant health problem.
When you shower, if you are dehydrated, you can take on as much as two pounds of water with its chlorine and many gallons of chlorinated water run over your body; AND
you breathe the chlorine fumes and other contaminants for the duration of the shower and even afterwards in the bathroom.

The filter has very fine pores in the compressed activated carbon portion (much finer than say a Jug filter and as such is able to filter out many more contaminates including bad taste and odors, lead, VOCs (volatile organic chemicals), THMs (trihalomethanes), cryptosporidium, giardia and MTBE . These can also put a heavy free radical load on your system and should be filtered out.

Baths give ear infections to infants and young children.
Giving baths to infants is highly likely to give dangerous ear infections requiring potent antibiotics and sleepless nights. Why? Well, the young diapered child cannot be completely cleaned off before bathing so the bacteria from under the diaper gets into the water. If the ears go under the water then the bacteria get into the ears. We had massive ear infections with one of my daughters, lasting weeks, when she was young and when we changed this practice she had no more infections. The solution is to shower and wash them first and then bathe them (if they love that bath) or to simply not allow the ears to go under the contaminated bath water.
